Gamma vs Canva: which AI presentation tool should you use?

8 min read

Last updated October 24, 2026. How we pick: we compare the job each tool is for, from public product pages, not a paid ranking.

The Gamma G mark and the Canva wordmark, in solid black on cream circles, on a blue to purple gradient, with a black vs badge between them.

Short answer: pick Gamma if you want an AI agent to turn a rough idea, notes or a file into a finished deck, document or simple website in minutes, and you care more about speed than pixel-level design control. Pick Canva if you want a full design suite where presentations sit next to social posts, video, docs, whiteboards and print, with drag-and-drop editing, a huge template library, brand controls and AI built in. Both have a free plan.

What Gamma does

Gamma creates presentations, documents, webpages and social posts with AI. Creating now starts with a conversation: you describe what you are making, attach notes or files if you have them, and Gamma's AI agent asks a few clarifying questions, shows its plan and then builds the whole thing, including research, writing, design and images.

You choose how much the agent checks in: Plan mode asks questions and waits for your go-ahead, Express mode goes straight to a first draft, and Research mode pulls in web sources first. After the draft, you can ask the agent to restyle the whole gamma, fix one slide or add research with citations, and it keeps your original goal in context. Imagine, Gamma's AI design canvas, makes standalone graphics such as infographics, posters and diagrams.

What Canva does

Canva describes itself as a free-to-use online graphic design tool for social posts, presentations, posters, videos, logos and more. Presentations are one format in a much bigger suite that also covers video, photo editing, docs, sheets, whiteboards, websites, email and print.

The core is a drag-and-drop editor with a very large library of templates, photos, graphics, video and audio, plus AI tools such as Magic Write, Magic Design, Magic Resize, Translate and background removal. Canva AI adds a conversational way to design: describe what you want by text or voice, connect your own tools for context, and refine the result by chatting or editing it yourself. For decks, Canva can turn a prompt into a ready-to-edit presentation, pull charts in from Canva Sheets and use Canva Code to build small interactive widgets, such as icebreaker games.

Building a deck: AI-first vs design-first

This is the real difference. Gamma is AI-first: the agent does most of the structural work, and its editor lays slides out on a fixed canvas with grids that adapt as you edit, plus freeform boxes when you want precise placement. You get a polished, consistent deck very quickly. Its optional Studio mode goes further and turns each slide into a single AI-generated image, which looks striking but allows only limited edits.

Canva is design-first. You can place, resize and animate every element, choose layouts and styles, and start from thousands of presentation templates. Its AI can produce a first draft, but you are expected to shape the result by hand. That takes longer than Gamma's one-prompt approach, but gives designers the control they are used to.

On branding, Gamma lets you customise a theme's fonts, colours and backgrounds and share workspace templates. Canva's Brand Kit stores your logos, colours and fonts, and paid team plans add brand controls, locked elements and design approvals.

Presenting, sharing and exporting

Gamma's Present mode has presenter view, speaker notes and spotlight mode, and any gamma can be shared by link with view, comment or edit access. Paid plans remove the "Made with Gamma" badge, and higher plans add password protection and detailed analytics on views and time spent per slide. You can export to PDF, PNG or PowerPoint, and to Google Slides via a PowerPoint upload.

Canva goes further on live presenting. Alongside presenter view and notes, you can record yourself, control slides from your phone, present offline, add polls and quizzes, and run Canva Live sessions where the audience asks questions. Decks export as PowerPoint, PDF, a video slideshow or a Canva website, and Canva can import PowerPoint files so you can keep editing existing decks.

Websites, documents and other formats

Gamma lets you convert any gamma into a website and publish it on a Gamma subdomain or, on higher paid plans, your own domain. Multi-page gammas bundle chapters, proposals or courses under one link, and social formats are sized for platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram.

Canva covers far more formats: video with a timeline editor, social content with scheduling, print with delivery, email designs, docs, sheets and websites. If you mostly need decks, docs and simple sites, Gamma's tighter focus is an advantage.

AI features and how usage works

Gamma meters AI with credits. Generating a presentation uses credits per slide and per image, and editing with the agent uses them too. Free accounts get a starting batch that does not refresh, though you can earn more through referrals. Paid plans get monthly credits that partly roll over, you can buy more, and higher plans unlock more advanced image models.

Canva uses a monthly AI allowance. On paid plans, standard AI tools such as Magic Write and Translate do not draw from it, while premium and ultra AI tools, such as Canva Code and design generation with Canva AI, share it. Higher plans include more, and Canva sells an AI Pass add-on.

On data, Gamma's help centre says individual plans allow content to be used for AI training by default, with an opt-out in settings, while Business and Enterprise workspaces are always opted out. Canva says you can update your privacy and AI settings at any time.

Integrations and teams

Gamma's connectors work both ways: its agent can use data from tools like Notion, Slack or Linear while it builds, and you can create gammas from inside ChatGPT, Claude or Slack, or automate them through Zapier, Make and n8n. Gamma also has an API and an early-access mobile app in selected countries.

Canva connects to hundreds of apps through its Apps Marketplace and has desktop, mobile and tablet apps. For teams, Canva Business adds collaboration, admin tools, more brand kits and ad tools, and Canva Enterprise adds enterprise-level security and controls. Gamma Business adds single sign-on, a shared workspace with pooled credits and centralised billing, and Gamma Enterprise adds admin controls, audit logs and invoiced billing.

Free plans and pricing

Both have a free plan. Gamma Free includes the AI agent, basic image models and a starting set of credits, but credits do not refresh and shared or exported content carries the Gamma badge. There is no traditional free trial. Paid plans run from Plus, Pro and Ultra for individuals to Business and Enterprise, billed per member.

Canva Free gives you the editor, a large free template and media library and a limited monthly AI allowance. Canva offers free trials of Pro and Business, sells Enterprise through its sales team, and gives eligible nonprofits and K-12 schools free access to premium features. Check the live Gamma pricing page and Canva pricing page for current plans, allowances and prices.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Gamma if you want an AI agent to build a complete deck, document or simple site from a prompt, notes or an uploaded file.
  • Pick Gamma if speed and a consistent, modern look matter more than placing every element yourself, or you want decks that double as shareable web pages.
  • Pick Canva if you want full design control, a huge template library and live presenting tools such as polls, recording and audience Q&A.
  • Pick Canva if your team also makes social posts, video, print and other content and wants it all in one branded workspace.

FAQ

Is Gamma better than Canva for presentations?

It depends on how you work. Gamma is faster if you want AI to build a whole deck from a prompt or a file. Canva is better if you want to design slides by hand, use templates and present with interactive tools like polls and Canva Live.

Can I use Gamma and Canva for free?

Yes. Both have a free plan. Gamma Free gives you a one-off set of AI credits that do not refresh, and shared or exported gammas show the Gamma badge. Canva Free includes the editor, free templates and a limited monthly AI allowance, and Canva offers free trials of its Pro and Business plans.

Can I export Gamma or Canva presentations to PowerPoint?

Yes. Gamma exports to PowerPoint, PDF and PNG, and to Google Slides by uploading the PowerPoint file. Canva exports presentations as PowerPoint, PDF, a video slideshow or a Canva website, and it can also import PowerPoint files so you can edit existing decks.

Which is better for making a website?

For a quick site built from a prompt or an existing deck, Gamma is simpler, and higher paid plans support your own domain. Canva also builds and publishes websites, and suits you better if the site is one part of a wider set of branded designs.

How do AI limits work in Gamma and Canva?

Gamma uses credits for AI actions such as generating slides and images or editing with the agent, refreshed monthly on paid plans. Canva uses a monthly AI allowance, and on paid plans many standard AI tools, such as Magic Write and Translate, do not count towards it. Check each live pricing page for current amounts.
