Grok vs Gemini: which AI assistant should you use?

7 min read

Last updated October 19, 2026. How we pick: we compare the job each tool is for, from public product pages, not a paid ranking.

The Grok mark and the Gemini sparkle mark, in solid black on cream circles, on an amber to indigo gradient, with a black vs badge between them.

Short answer: pick Grok if you want answers about what is happening right now, with live search across the web and X, plus images and short videos made in the same chat. Pick Gemini if your work already lives in Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar, and you want an assistant that can read and act across those apps, run long research reports and turn them into something you can share. Both are free to start and both run on web and mobile. The difference is where each one plugs in.

Plans, limits and model names change often, so check both live pricing pages before you decide. Everything below comes from each product's own site.

What Grok does

Grok describes itself as AI that is useful for everyone: chat, search, reasoning and creating, all in one place. You can use it at grok.com, in the iOS and Android apps, and inside X, and you can sign in with an X or email account.

Its clearest strength is live information. Grok searches the web and X in real time and shows citations, so it's built for questions about breaking news, trends and what people are posting right now. Follow-up questions let you drill into a topic without starting over.

Grok also has a multi-agent mode, where several agents work on parts of a hard question in parallel and then merge their work into one cited answer. Each agent's reasoning is shown so you can check it.

For creative work, Grok Imagine generates images and short videos from text prompts or reference photos, and you can restyle and edit the results with follow-up prompts in the same conversation. Grok also offers natural voice conversations, file and PDF analysis, image understanding, code generation, a canvas for long-form writing, custom instructions, memory across chats and shareable threads. Its maker also publishes Grok Build for creating websites and apps, and an API with the same models for developers.

One detail is unusual. Grok's paid tiers are sold as one subscription that also covers X features, such as the Premium checkmark, and includes usage in Cursor, the coding tool. If you already pay for X, check what your plan includes before you buy anything else.

What Gemini does

Gemini is Google's AI assistant, formerly called Bard. Google describes it as a personal, proactive and powerful assistant, and it runs on the web, in the mobile apps and on desktop. Unloc's own card puts it simply: it's most useful when the work already lives in Docs, Gmail and Drive.

That connection to Google's apps is the core of the pitch. Gemini can summarise emails from certain contacts, find details in your inbox, add events to Calendar from a photo of a flyer, add items to Keep, plot places on Maps and build playlists in YouTube Music. Paid Google AI plans also put Gemini directly inside Gmail, Docs, Vids and more.

Deep Research is Gemini's agentic research mode. It turns your prompt into a research plan, browses hundreds of websites and, if you choose, your Gmail, Drive and Chat, shows its reasoning, and delivers a multi-page report you can also hear as an Audio Overview. Canvas can then turn that report, or any idea, into a working app, game, quiz, web page or infographic, and it doubles as a space for drafting and refining writing.

Gemini Live lets you move between typing and talking in the same thread, show Gemini what your camera sees, and ask it to act across Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Tasks, Keep, Maps and YouTube while you talk. Gemini can also remember your preferences and draw on past chats, and you can view, edit or delete what it has saved.

For repeat work, Gemini has skills: custom shortcuts you describe once and reuse, which you can stack in a single prompt. Google says it is moving its older Gems feature over to skills. On the creative side, Nano Banana handles image generation and editing, including text in images and combining photos, and Google AI plans add video generation and editing.

Gemini Pro is built for very long inputs. Google says it can take in long documents and whole code repositories at once, then suggest edits, debug and explain how the parts fit together.

Free plans compared

Both are free to start. Gemini's free tier is unusually broad: Google lists image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems with a Google Account, along with Google's free cloud storage. Grok's free tier offers limited chat and agent requests, and its pricing page recommends a paid tier for new AI users who want more everyday usage.

Both meter heavy use. Grok's paid plans share one usage pool across Grok and Cursor that refreshes weekly. Gemini's limits depend on how complex your prompts are and which features you use, and you can buy AI credits to extend them. If you rely on video, long files or research reports every day, expect to pay for whichever one you choose.

Paid plans and bundles

The two bundles are built very differently. Grok's paid tiers come with X features and Cursor usage, and higher tiers add Grok Bot, cloud agents and priority access at busy times. Google's AI plans for individuals, which Google lists as Plus, Pro and Ultra, come with Google One cloud storage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, more access to Google's AI creative studio and, from Pro up, access to Google Antigravity, its agentic coding platform. Higher tiers add more of each.

So the cheaper option in practice is often the one that replaces something you already pay for. If you pay for X, look at Grok first. If you pay for extra Google storage, look at Gemini first. Check the live pricing pages for what each tier includes today, because plan names and limits move.

For teams and businesses

Grok offers a Teams plan with pooled usage, central billing and admin, and an Enterprise tier with SSO, SCIM and audit controls. Google sells Gemini Enterprise editions for business, which can connect to tools like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, HubSpot and Jira, build custom agents with a no-code Workflow Builder, and keep company data out of Google's model training.

If your company already runs on Google Workspace, Gemini slots in with the least friction. If your team lives on X or builds in Cursor, Grok's bundle covers more of what you already use.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Grok if your questions are about news, trends or what's being said on X right now, and you want live citations.
  • Pick Grok if you want images and short videos made and edited in the same chat, or you already pay for X and want to use what your plan includes.
  • Pick Gemini if your work lives in Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar and you want an assistant that can search and act across them.
  • Pick Gemini if you want long research reports, very long documents or whole codebases handled in one go, and a generous free tier to try it on.

FAQ

Is Grok free?

Yes, Grok is free to try on the web and in the apps, with limited usage. Paid tiers add more usage and features like multi-agent reasoning. Check the live Grok pricing page for current plans.

Is Gemini free?

Yes. Gemini is free with a Google Account, and the free tier includes Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and image generation. Google AI plans add more usage, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and video generation. Check the live Google AI plans page for current limits.

Which one is better for current events?

Grok, for most people. It searches the web and X live and cites its sources, which makes it strong for breaking news and trends. Gemini's Deep Research browses the web too, but it's built for thorough reports rather than following what's trending on X.

Which one works better with Gmail and Google Docs?

Gemini. It can search your Gmail and Drive, manage Calendar, Tasks and Keep, and on paid plans it works directly inside Gmail and Docs. Grok can analyse files you upload, but it isn't built into Google's apps.

How much do they cost?

Both have free plans and several paid tiers, and both change their pricing often. Check the live Grok pricing page and Google AI plans page for current numbers.
