Canva vs CapCut: which video editor should you use?

9 min read

Last updated October 29, 2026. How we pick: we compare the job each tool is for, from public product pages, not a paid ranking.

The Canva wordmark and the CapCut mark, in solid black on cream circles, on a purple to cyan gradient, with a black vs badge between them.

Short answer: pick Canva if video is one part of a wider content job and you want social posts, presentations, ads and videos made in one place, kept on brand and shared with a team. Pick CapCut if video is the main job, especially short-form clips for TikTok, Reels and YouTube, and you want a dedicated editor with deeper timeline controls, AI captions, voices and avatars. Both have a free plan, and many creators design thumbnails and graphics in Canva and cut the video itself in CapCut.

Plans, AI allowances, credits and prices change often and vary by country, so check both live pricing pages before you decide. Everything below comes from each company's own website, plan pages and terms.

What Canva does

Canva calls itself a visual suite for everyone. You start from a template or a blank canvas and make social posts, videos, presentations, documents and more, with a large library of stock photos, video, graphics and audio. Canva AI lets you create and refine designs through conversation, Brand Kit keeps your fonts, colours and logos in one place, and Magic Resize turns one design into versions for different channels.

Video is one of the things Canva does, not the only one. Its video editor uses a drag-and-drop, multi-layered timeline where you trim, split, splice and layer clips, add animations and transitions, and start from trending social templates. Canva runs in the browser, in desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and in mobile apps for iOS and Android, and it is also available on Chromebook.

What CapCut does

CapCut describes itself as an AI-powered photo and video editor for everyone, with everything you need to create trending content for YouTube, Instagram and beyond. It comes as CapCut Online in the browser, CapCut Desktop, CapCut Mobile and CapCut Pad, and projects saved to your cloud Space can be opened from different devices. CapCut is provided by Bytedance Pte. Ltd., the company named in its terms and privacy policy.

The editor covers the everyday jobs, such as trimming, cropping, splitting, reversing and mirroring clips, adding music, text, stickers, effects, transitions and filters, removing backgrounds and generating captions. CapCut Desktop adds tools aimed at more serious editors, including colour wheels, keyframes and curves, smart search for your media, shortcuts and auto reframing that keeps the main subject in frame when you change aspect ratio. Around the editor sit AI tools for images, voices and video, plus sister apps listed on its site, such as Dreamina for AI image and video creation.

Video editing: all-in-one canvas vs dedicated editor

This is the core difference. Canva treats video as another design format. The timeline is simple to learn, and the same brand fonts, colours, graphics and templates you use for posts and slides are right there, so a team can turn a campaign into a video without leaving the tool. For many social videos, ads and explainers that is exactly what you need.

CapCut is built for editing first. On top of the basics it offers finer control over motion and colour, with keyframes, curves and an advanced colour wheel on desktop, and it is designed around the pace of short-form video, with templates and effects aimed at TikTok, Reels and YouTube. CapCut's desktop page pitches it at everyone from beginners to experts. If you edit footage most days and care about timing, transitions and look, CapCut gives you more room to work. If you only make the occasional video alongside other designs, Canva is usually quicker.

AI features

Canva's video AI is about saving time on edits. Highlights surfaces the best moments in your footage, Magic Video takes your clips and a short prompt and styles, cuts and sequences them into a social-ready video, Beat Sync matches your clips to the rhythm of a soundtrack, and Enhance Voice removes background noise from recordings. Canva AI's Create a Video Clip turns a text prompt into an AI-generated clip with synchronised audio, including dialogue and sound effects, and Canva can turn a photo into a talking-head presenter, offers AI avatars and voices, and can dub existing videos into other languages. Text to speech and image to video are also built in.

CapCut's AI goes deeper into video production. Auto captions recognise the spoken language, generate synchronised captions you can edit and style, and can translate them. The AI video maker can write a script from your idea, pick a digital avatar as presenter, add an AI voiceover and synced subtitles, and you can create a personalised avatar from a video of yourself. Text to speech offers many AI voices, control over speed and pitch, and voice cloning from a short recording of your own voice. CapCut's AI video generator, powered by Dreamina Seedance models, turns text, images or keyframes into video. Many of these tools use AI credits, which come with paid plans and can be topped up.

Templates, brand and design

Canva's biggest advantage is everything around the video. You can make the thumbnail, the social post, the presentation and the ad from the same Brand Kit, and Canva says Canva AI learns your brand's fonts, colours and rules so new designs stay on brand. Its free background remover works on images, with batch removal and transparent PNG downloads, and the video background remover is a Pro feature.

CapCut also has a large template library, with Reels and TikTok templates, social media templates, AI effects templates and business templates, and its online tools cover image editing, background removal, image enhancement, resizing and AI image generation. A brand kit appears on its Teams plan. For brand-heavy marketing work across many formats, Canva is the stronger hub; for template-led social video, CapCut is the more focused one.

Publishing, collaboration and apps

Canva can publish videos directly to social platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Tumblr from the Share menu once you connect your accounts, and its editor connects to cloud storage apps for uploads. Collaboration and team admin tools are part of Canva Business and Enterprise, with brand approvals on those plans.

CapCut lets you upload media from your computer, cloud storage, Google Drive, Dropbox or by QR code, share finished videos straight to social channels such as TikTok, and publish to YouTube from CapCut Desktop. Its web editor includes cloud storage and collaboration features for shared work, and the Teams plan gives every seat access to paid features. Export settings let you choose resolution, quality, frame rate and format.

Watermarks, ownership and privacy

Canva says free users can export videos without a watermark as long as they only use free elements, footage and music; watermarks appear only when a Canva Free account uses Pro or paid elements, and Canva Pro exports have no watermarks. CapCut's own pages say its online editor exports videos without a watermark, while premium templates and features come with paid plans.

On ownership, Canva says it does not claim ownership of your content and lets you opt out of having your designs used to train its AI models at any time. CapCut's terms say it does not own your content, but that by submitting content you grant the company and its affiliates a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, perpetual and worldwide licence to use it, and its privacy policy lists training and improving technology such as machine learning models among the ways it uses information. If you edit client work or sensitive footage, read both companies' current terms and privacy policies before you choose.
