Claude's Next Model: What Anthropic Has Signalled vs Rumour
6 min read
Last updated October 31, 2026. How we cover news: we write from the official announcement and docs (linked below) and point you to the tools on Unloc. Not sponsored.

Short answer: Anthropic has not announced its next Claude model, its name or a release date as of 31 Oct 2026. The newest model it has released is Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October, and nothing has shipped since. Anthropic's official signals are about pace, not a launch: its CEO has said the company must "slow the pace" of capability gains while not halting training. A "Fable 5.5" has been leaked and reported, but only as Rumour and Reported claims, and an "October" release that one report suggested has not happened.

Pin this category · $149/moStatus: Not released as of 31 Oct 2026. Last verified: 31 Oct 2026 (Dubai time), against Anthropic's newsroom and the Claude platform release notes, whose latest entry is dated 30 October and announces no new model.
What's confirmed
- Official: Anthropic's current lineup per its docs is Fable 5.1 (1 Sep 2026), Opus 5.5 (22 Sep), Sonnet 5.5 (28 Sep) and Haiku 5.5 (7 Oct), with Mythos 5.1 restricted to Project Glasswing participants (Claude platform release notes).
- Official: no new Claude model has appeared in the newsroom or release notes since Haiku 5.5. Anthropic's October announcements have included products and company news, such as Claude Duet on 21 Oct and its IPO filing on 26 Oct, not a model.
- Official: in the Opus 5.5 post Anthropic described it as "our first release since we called for pacing the frontier" and said models able to fully automate AI research "could be trained soon" (Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 post).
- Not known: the next model's name, date, price or capabilities.
How we label claims: Official means published by Anthropic or its CEO. Reported means a news outlet or aggregator said it. Rumour means leaked or unsourced. Each has a source and date, and we do not predict dates.

What Anthropic has officially signalled
In September 2026 Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier". He wrote: "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models." He also wrote that "pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress". The Guardian covered it on 12 September. Ten days later the Opus 5.5 post said: "Models with greater capabilities—such as those that can fully automate the work of AI research itself—require a higher safety standard still. Our calls for pacing were based in large part on our expectation that such models could be trained soon."
What this means: Anthropic has said it is still training models, expects more capable ones soon enough to plan for, and will hold them to a higher bar. What it does not say is that a specific model is next, what it is called, or when it ships. Reading it as "a launch is imminent" or "a launch is delayed" goes beyond the text.
What has been reported
| Date | Claim | Label | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Sep 2026 | Reuters said, citing three sources, that Anthropic is considering a new model to counter OpenAI's momentum after GPT-6 Astra. It named no model and no date, and Anthropic declined to comment. We could not open the Reuters page and rely on 9to5AI's summary. | Reported | Reuters, via 9to5AI |
| Mid-Oct 2026 | The Information reported that Anthropic is readying a model that "reads users' intentions better". The article is paywalled; we could read only the headline. HuggingNews's summary, dated 16 Oct, says the model is "expected to launch in October". | Reported | The Information; HuggingNews (summary) |
The "expected to launch in October" detail comes only from the secondary summary, not from Anthropic and not from anything we could read in The Information. October ends today and the release notes show no new model since 7 October, so that expectation has not been met so far.
What is only rumour
- "Fable 5.5" in cloud catalogues. On 17 Oct 2026 a Fable 5.5 listing reportedly appeared in Microsoft Azure's model catalogue through a LiteLLM entry, as the leak-tracking site TestingCatalog reported. It was removed a day later, per 9to5AI. Anthropic has not confirmed it. Label: Rumour.
- Codenames and partner testing. HuggingNews summarises posts on X saying a codename ("claude-onigiri-eap-2") appeared in a third-party benchmarking site's code, and that partners had tested two checkpoints of a Fable 5.5 model. These come from social posts, not Anthropic. Label: Rumour.
Leaks like these can point to something real, but they can also be placeholder entries copied from an earlier model; the Azure entry reportedly carried over Fable 5.1's details. We would not plan around a name or date from a leak.
What Anthropic's release history does and doesn't tell you
Anthropic's release notes show new models on 12 separate days between 5 Feb and 7 Oct 2026. That is a fast pace, and it is the reason people expect something soon. But a pattern is not a promise: Anthropic has not published a naming plan. As of 31 Oct it has been 24 days since Haiku 5.5, and we are not forecasting when the next release comes. The question is the same one OpenAI faces; see GPT-7: what we know about OpenAI's next model.
What "next model" could mean
Anthropic's recent releases arrived one tier at a time rather than all at once: Opus 5.5 on 22 September, Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September and Haiku 5.5 on 7 October. So "the next Claude model" could be a single new tier, a new Fable or Mythos release, or a model with a new name. The leaked "Fable 5.5" name would be a point update to the Fable line rather than a new generation, and nothing official confirms even that. When something does ship, expect it to appear first in Anthropic's newsroom and in the Claude platform release notes, with the API name, which is the check that separates a launch from a leak.
What to do now
- Use the current lineup. Pick the tier by job and budget; the API names and prices are in Anthropic's docs and change, so we do not list them here.
- Don't pre-commit to a leaked name. If you build on the API, check the Claude platform release notes for the exact API name before you change anything in production, and treat any other listing as unconfirmed.
- If you use Sonnet 4.5, plan to move before 30 November 2026.

FAQ
When will Anthropic release its next Claude model?
No date is announced. As of 31 Oct 2026 Anthropic's newsroom and release notes show nothing newer than Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October. Reports suggested an October release, but those came from secondary summaries of a paywalled article and have not materialised.
Is there a "Claude Fable 5.5" or "Claude 6"?
Anthropic has announced neither. Fable 5.5 appears only in leaks, including a listing in Azure's catalogue on 17 October that was reportedly removed a day later. Anthropic has not announced a Claude 6 or any naming plan.
Did Anthropic say a new model was coming in October?
No. The "expected to launch in October" claim comes from HuggingNews's summary of a report in The Information. Anthropic has not confirmed it. Its own statements, in the Opus 5.5 post, are only that more capable models "could be trained soon".
Does Anthropic's call to "pace the frontier" mean fewer releases?
Not necessarily. Dario Amodei wrote that "pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress", and Anthropic shipped Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 after calling for pacing. The essay says nothing about a release schedule, so it should not be read as one.
Which Claude model should I use today?
Use the current lineup: Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku 5.5, depending on the job, cost and speed, as set out in Anthropic's docs. Our Claude vs ChatGPT guide helps when you are choosing between assistants.
