Notion vs Linear: workspace or issue tracker?

Short answer: use Notion if nobody knows what you decided. Use Linear if a bug has been open for eleven days with no owner. Notion can pretend to be a tracker. Linear refuses to be a wiki. Forcing one to do both is how a studio loses the thread.

What is Notion?

Notion is a workspace. Guidelines, notes, wikis, a light CRM if you are careful, and a database you can bend into almost anything. Flexibility is the appeal and the trap. Without an owner, it is a junk drawer with good type.

What is Linear?

Linear is an issue tracker. Cycles, issues, a keyboard-first pace, and a refusal to host the brand guidelines. That refusal is the product. A bug has a status, an owner, and a place to go when it is done. It will not become your company wiki, and you should not ask it to.

So, which tool should you open?

Five questions. If you cannot answer them, you do not have a tooling problem yet. Pricing changes — read Notion’s pricing and Linear’s pricing rather than a number from a 2023 roundup. We are not inventing a seat price.

1. What is missing this week?

If the missing thing is a decision — “what did we agree, and where is it written?” — start with Notion. If the missing thing is an owner — “who is closing this, and why is it still open?” — start with Linear.

2. Can you describe the unit of work?

Linear wants an issue: a title, a person, a state. If the work cannot be written that way, it is not ready for a tracker. Notion will let you write a paragraph instead, which is correct for a decision and fatal for a bug, because a paragraph does not close.

3. Who else has to live there?

A founder can keep notes anywhere. The moment a second person needs the same status, a wiki page with a checkbox is how tasks go quiet. Linear is stricter, which is why people who ship software tend to stay. Notion is where the writing around the work belongs: the spec, the decision, the brand note.

4. The homemade tracker

Notion can be a tracker. People build one, then stop updating it, then build a second. The concrete test: if a task exists in Notion and in Linear, it exists in neither. Pick one home for “work with a date”. Do not mirror.

Do not run two trackers. The point goes to whichever you will actually close. We are not awarding it twice.

5. What should never move

Brand guidelines, meeting notes, and a reference the whole studio reads — Notion. A bug, a cycle, a thing that blocks a release — Linear. Height is the other tracker on this directory if Linear’s shape is wrong for you. It is still a tracker, not a wiki.

Keep the split. Notion 3; Linear 4, only because more of the pain we see is unowned work, not missing notes.

Which should you choose?

Linear takes it 4–3 if the studio’s problem is shipping. Notion takes it if the studio’s problem is memory. Plenty of teams need both, on purpose, with a rule.

Who Notion is best for

• Decisions, guidelines, and notes have nowhere obvious to live.
• The “tracker” would really be a document with a date on it.
• You will name an owner for the workspace, or it will rot.

Who Linear is best for

• Software work needs an owner, a state, and a cycle.
• You are willing to write an issue instead of a paragraph.
• You do not need the same tool to store the brand book.

The rule that holds

Work with a ticket and a date lives in Linear. Writing around it lives in Notion. Link them. Do not copy the task.

Can Notion replace Linear?

Only if the team is tiny and the “issues” are really notes. The day a bug sits for a fortnight with no owner, the wiki has stopped being a tracker.

Can Linear replace Notion?

No. Linear will not hold the guidelines, and that is correct. Put the decision in Notion and the issue in Linear.

Which is cheaper?

Both offer a way for a small team to start and a paid seat when you grow. Compare the current pricing pages, and compare them to the cost of a task that exists in two places. The duplicate is usually more expensive than the subscription.

Where do they sit on Unloc?

Notion is under productivity and notes. Linear is under project management. The lists are organic. Paying for Claim #1 does not move them.
