GPT-7 Release Date: What We Know About OpenAI's Next Model
6 min read
Last updated October 31, 2026. How we cover news: we write from the official announcement and docs (linked below) and point you to the tools on Unloc. Not sponsored.

Short answer: OpenAI has not announced GPT-7, or any release date for a model after GPT-6.1 Terra, as of 31 Oct 2026. Terra, released on 26 October, is the newest general model in OpenAI's GPT-6 family. OpenAI's own posts confirm it has an internal frontier model and resumed training its frontier models on 1 October, but they name no successor, so "GPT-7" is currently only a search term. The next flagship may well carry a GPT-6.x name instead.

What's confirmed
- Official: the OpenAI API changelog lists no GPT-7 and no unreleased model. Its latest entries are GPT-6.1 Terra (26 Oct) and
gpt-6-rosalind(30 Oct), a specialised biology model that is limited to approved organisations, not a general successor. - Official: OpenAI said on 23 Oct 2026 that it "resumed reinforcement learning (RL) training and internal inference of our frontier models on October 1", after an 11-day pause (OpenAI's 23 Oct 2026 post on its training environment).
- Official: on 6 Oct 2026 OpenAI said results in mathematics were "produced by an internal frontier model" and that it is "working to responsibly release the model that produced these results" (OpenAI's 6 Oct 2026 maths post). It gave no name or date.
- Official (via press): a planned GPT-6.1 Astra release was scrapped on 28 Sep 2026 (CNBC, The Guardian).
- Not known: the name, date, price or capabilities of OpenAI's next flagship.
How we label claims: Official means published by OpenAI or stated by its staff on the record. Reported means a news outlet or aggregator said it. Rumour means unsourced or leaked. We give a source and date for each, and we do not predict dates.
What OpenAI has said, in order
| Date | What happened | Label | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 Aug 2026 | OpenAI said it had "temporarily slowed the pace of scaling" and that its "largest planned frontier RL run remains on hold", and flagged "preliminary evidence that one of our upcoming models, Astra, may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold". | Official | OpenAI's 18 Aug 2026 post on pacing |
| 3 Sep 2026 | GPT-6 Astra added to the API. | Official | OpenAI API changelog |
| 28 Sep 2026 | OpenAI scrapped the planned GPT-6.1 Astra release. Saachi Jain told CNBC it "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization". A spokesperson said the company has other models coming soon. The Guardian said GPT-6.1 Astra "was expected to appear in ChatGPT and Codex in October"; The Wall Street Journal broke the story. | Official statement, reported by press | CNBC, The Guardian |

What this tells you, and what it doesn't
The pattern across OpenAI's own posts is a company that has said it is pacing its biggest models. The 18 August post describes slowed scaling and a large run on hold, the 23 October post says the work it describes is "core part of responsibly pacing the development of our frontier models", and the 28 September cancellation shows that a planned release can be pulled on safety grounds. None of these gives a timetable. We are not predicting one.
The same posts do confirm that frontier training resumed on 1 October and that OpenAI has more than one unreleased model: an internal frontier model, and an "upcoming GPT-6 Astra Cyber model". Neither is named as a GPT-7. The Information's headline fits this picture, because it says OpenAI is fixing safety issues before shipping a next flagship, but it is Reported, and we have not seen the body of the story.
Will it be called GPT-7?
Nothing from OpenAI says so. Its recent naming has used point releases inside the GPT-6 family: GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, then GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra. The scrapped model was "GPT-6.1 Astra", not a new generation. That makes GPT-6.1 Astra, or another GPT-6.x name, at least as plausible as GPT-7 for the next flagship. We label that as our reading of OpenAI's naming, not a report.
9to5AI, an aggregator we treat as secondary, notes the history between past generations: 877 days from GPT-4 to GPT-5, and 392 days from GPT-5 to GPT-6 Astra. These are past gaps, not a schedule, and 9to5AI itself says no GPT-7 has been announced. Pages that give a GPT-7 release date or specs without citing OpenAI are speculation, and we class them as Rumour.
How you'll know a real launch from a rumour
OpenAI's launches leave a clear trail. GPT-6.1 Terra had a post on openai.com on 26 October, an entry in the OpenAI API changelog for the API name gpt-6.1-terra, and a system card addendum the same day. A real next-flagship launch would leave the same trail, probably with safety documentation given how much of OpenAI's recent writing is about cyber and containment risk. If a site, leaderboard or social post names a model that is not in the changelog and has no openai.com page, treat it as Rumour, however confident the screenshot looks.
It also helps to separate three kinds of model. General models, such as Terra, Sol and Astra, are the ones people mean by "the next GPT". Specialised models, such as gpt-6-rosalind for biology, ship to limited audiences. Internal models, such as the one behind the maths results, are not available at all. A new name appearing in the changelog does not mean the next flagship has arrived.
What to use today
If you are choosing a model now, work from what OpenAI has actually shipped. Our GPT-6.1 Terra explainer covers where Terra is available and when OpenAI itself recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra instead. For tool comparisons, see the ChatGPT page, Claude vs ChatGPT, Grok vs ChatGPT and ChatGPT vs Gemini. We deliberately don't quote prices here; they change, so check OpenAI's pricing page for the model you pick.
The same question is open on the other side: see Claude's next model: what Anthropic has signalled and what's only rumour.
FAQ
When is GPT-7 coming out?
There is no announced date. As of 31 Oct 2026 OpenAI has not announced GPT-7, and its API changelog lists no unreleased model. Its newest general model is GPT-6.1 Terra, released on 26 October 2026.
Is GPT-7 OpenAI's next model?
Unknown. OpenAI has named no successor, and its recent releases are point updates inside the GPT-6 family. The next flagship could be called GPT-6.1 Astra or something else. "GPT-7" is what people search for, not a name OpenAI has used.
What happened to GPT-6.1 Astra?
OpenAI abandoned the planned release on 28 September 2026. OpenAI's Saachi Jain told CNBC the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it's done". The Wall Street Journal reported it first.
Is OpenAI training something bigger than GPT-6?
OpenAI says it has an internal frontier model and resumed frontier RL training on 1 October. It has not said how large that model is, what it will be called, or when it will ship. It said on 6 October it is "working to responsibly release" the model behind its maths results.
Should I wait for the next OpenAI model?
Not on a rumour. With no date or name, use what is available, and OpenAI's own guidance is that GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain stronger than Terra for the hardest coding. If you are comparing assistants, our Claude vs ChatGPT guide is a good starting point.
