Grok 5: Release Date, Size Claims and What We Know
6 min read
Last updated October 31, 2026. How we cover news: we write from the official announcement and docs (linked below) and point you to the tools on Unloc. Not sponsored.

Short answer: Grok 5 has not been released as of 31 Oct 2026, and xAI has announced no release date. xAI's only written statement is that "Grok 5 is currently in training", published on 6 January 2026. The release dates, the parameter counts (such as 6 trillion) and the odds of reaching AGI all come from Elon Musk, and his date targets have moved several times since August 2025.

Pin this category · $149/moStatus: Not released as of 31 Oct 2026. Last verified: 31 Oct 2026 (Dubai time), against xAI's Series E announcement, the xAI API release notes, xAI's Grok 4.7 announcement, SpaceX's investor filings and Musk's public posts on X. Some sites have published "Grok 5 launched" stories. They are wrong: xAI's news page and API documentation list no Grok 5.
What's confirmed
- Official: "Grok 5 is currently in training" (xAI's Series E announcement, 6 Jan 2026). That is the whole official statement: no date, size or capabilities.
- Official: the newest Grok model is Grok 4.7 (21 Sep 2026, per xAI API release notes). No Grok 5 or Grok 4.8 appears there.
- Claimed by Musk (official transcript): on SpaceX's Q2 call on 4 Aug 2026 he said Grok 5 "should be out before the end of this year" and will incorporate "the entire corpus of SpaceX data" (SpaceX Q2 2026 earnings transcript).
- Not known: release date, parameter count, price, benchmarks, and whether Grok 5 is a model already in training or one yet to start.
How we label claims: Official means published by xAI or SpaceX on their own sites or in filings. Claimed by Musk means Elon Musk wrote or said it, which is not an xAI announcement. Reported means a third-party outlet said it. Rumour means unsourced or leaked.
How the Grok 5 date has moved
Every date below is a target Musk gave, not an xAI commitment. The pattern is what matters: the target has been pushed back each time it passed.
| Date | What was said | Label | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Aug 2025 | "Grok 5 will be out before the end of this year and it will be crushingly good" | Claimed by Musk | X post |
| Mid-Nov 2025 | At an investor conference, Musk said Grok 5 would launch in "the first 3 months of 2026 instead of the planned end-of-2025", as Benzinga reported on 17 Nov. | Reported | Benzinga |
| 9 Dec 2025 | "Grok 4.20 is coming in ~3 weeks and then Grok 5 in a few months" | Claimed by Musk | X post |
| 6 Jan 2026 | "Grok 5 is currently in training" | Official | xAI's Series E announcement |
| 4 Aug 2026 | "With Grok 5, which should be out before the end of this year, we will be incorporating the entire corpus of SpaceX data." | Claimed by Musk (official transcript) | SpaceX Q2 2026 earnings transcript |
| 14 Sep 2026 | "Grok 5 maybe better than anything. We shall see." | Claimed by Musk | X post |
| 20 Oct 2026 | SpaceX's Q3 call: the transcript we read does not give a Grok 5 date. It does not name Grok 4.8 either. | Reported (transcript by a secondary source) | Motley Fool's SpaceX Q3 call transcript |
So the first target was the end of 2025, then early 2026, then "a few months" after December 2025, and by August 2026 it was "before the end of this year", meaning 2026. As of 31 October, that leaves two months. No date has been announced.
Size claims: 6T, 10T and the problem with all of them
xAI has never published a parameter count for Grok 5, and we found none in its Grok 4.7 post either. The figures in circulation are Musk's:
- Reported, Nov 2025: Musk said Grok 5 would have 6 trillion parameters, per Benzinga, with Grok 3 and Grok 4 described as 3T models.
- Claimed by Musk, 8 Apr 2026: "SpaceXAI Colossus 2 now has 7 models in training": Imagine V2, two 1T variants, two 1.5T variants, a 6T and a 10T (X post). The post does not say which of these is Grok 5.
- Claimed by Musk, 20 Apr 2026: a joke ladder reply, "4.6 → 3T / 4.7 → 6T / 4.8 → 10T / 4.9 → ??? / 5.0 → AGI" (X post). Informal, and it does not match what he said later.
- Claimed by Musk, 14 Sep 2026: "Grok 4.8, which is a 2.5T model" (X post). Next to the earlier numbers, it shows that the sizes Musk gives have not stayed consistent.
The safe reading: Musk has talked about 6T and 10T models in training, and has said Grok 5 would be 6T. None of that is confirmed by xAI, and the size of a model tells you little about how good it is. Treat any "Grok 5 will have X trillion parameters" headline as his claim.
The AGI claims
Musk has repeatedly tied Grok 5 to AGI. On 17 Sep 2025 he wrote "I now think @xAI has a chance of reaching AGI with @Grok 5. Never thought that before" (X post), and on 18 Oct 2025 "My estimate of the probability of Grok 5 achieving AGI is now at 10% and rising" (X post). In the Benzinga report he put the chance of human-level intelligence at "roughly 10%". These are Claimed by Musk. There is no agreed definition of AGI, no test has been published, and xAI has made no such claim itself.
How Grok 5 relates to Grok 4.8 and 4.9
On 14 Sep 2026 Musk listed Grok 4.8, Grok 4.9 and Grok 5 as the next steps, and in a reply the same day he wrote "That will be Grok 5" in answer to a question about how close Grok 4.8 gets to AGI. On 30 Oct he said Grok 4.8 has "taken longer than expected". Whether that slip says anything about Grok 5 is unknown. See Grok 4.8: release date, what to expect for the dated claims.
How to tell a real launch from a fake one
When xAI ships a model it publishes a post on its news page, and the model appears in the API release notes with its API name, context window and prices on the same day. That is what happened for Grok 4.7: an announcement on 21 Sep 2026 and a matching release-notes entry. If a site says Grok 5 is live but cannot point to either, treat the story as Rumour. We don't link the sites that ran false launch stories.
Also watch the wording. A Musk post saying a model is "coming" or "finishing training" is a claim about progress, not a release. Training, reinforcement learning, safety testing and API rollout are separate stages, and xAI has not published a schedule for any of them for Grok 5.
What to do while you wait
- Plan on Grok 4.7. It is the newest model xAI has released, per its xAI API release notes.
- Don't build on a date. A target that has moved from end-2025 to "before the end of this year" is not one to depend on.
- Compare options. See best Grok alternatives, Grok vs ChatGPT, Grok vs Claude and Grok vs Gemini, and the Grok and Grok Bot pages.
FAQ
When will Grok 5 be released?
No date has been announced. The most recent target is Musk's remark on SpaceX's 4 August 2026 earnings call that Grok 5 "should be out before the end of this year". Earlier targets (end of 2025, then Q1 2026) passed without a release.
How many parameters will Grok 5 have?
xAI has not said. Musk said 6 trillion in November 2025, per Benzinga, and has since mentioned 6T and 10T models in training without saying which is Grok 5. Treat sizes as his claims.
Is Grok 5 AGI?
Not by any published test. Musk put the chance of Grok 5 achieving AGI at 10% in October 2025 and has said "we shall see". That is his estimate, and xAI has not claimed AGI.
Has Grok 5 already launched?
No. Some sites have published stories saying so, but xAI's news page and API release notes show no Grok 5, and the newest model is Grok 4.7. The only official line is "Grok 5 is currently in training", dated 6 January 2026.
Should I wait for Grok 5 or use Grok 4.7?
Use Grok 4.7 for anything you need now. With no date and no specification, there is nothing to plan around, and other assistants may suit your work better today; our Grok alternatives guide compares them.
